San Carlos provides year round excitement for the sport fishing enthusiast. The calendar below is an approximation of the most popular types of fish that may be found offshore in the typical seasons. There is something for everyone, but the most exciting angling comes with the summer pelagics (dorado, billfish, tuna) which show up when the water temperature approaches 72 degrees…typically late April to early May.
Dorado and striped marlin are first, followed shortly by sailfish which are sometimes among the first arrivals. The larger blue and black marlin typically appear as the water gets warmer, and the best chance for catching very large blue or black marlin is during the late summer months. Yellowfin tuna (as well as blueback tuna) are sporadic and can range from plentiful for months to nothing more than an occasional catch. Wahoo are also sporadic and count yourself lucky when you can catch one of these delicious eating fish. Skipjack (black) can be caught closer to shore and while they are not very desirable for the table, they do provide great excitement on light tackle.
The good news is when the water cools off, the summer fish are replaced (typically late October) by bonita, larger sierra mackerel, and the outstanding yellowtail which can get any angler’s heart beating with lighter tackle. Great sushi as well! San Pedro Island is the target spot for winter yellowtail, but frequently they may be found just a few miles out from Marina Real.
